DEPARTMENT OF PERIODONTOLOGY

DEPARTMENT OF PERIODONTICS

Preiodontics is that branch of dentistry that focuses on preventing, diagnosing and treating diseases of the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. Gum tissue serves as a protective layer that covers the jaw bone and the roots of the teeth. The gums and the underlying bone anchor the teeth in their place. With healthy gums the patient’s chances of problem is at a lower risks. Fums tissue in adults is prone to inflammation caused by the bacteria that are commonly found in the mouth. Dental plaque is the primary cause of gum disease in genetically-susceptible individual. Bacteria found in plaque produce toxins that irritate the gums and cause them to turn redness, swelling and bleeding easily. If these continuous for a prolonged period of time the gums detach from the teeth causing pockets(spaces to from). Plaque can also harden into a rough, porous substance known as calculus(or tatar). More recently research has linked gum health to certain systemic conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. Other factors such as tobacco use and genetic predisposition can contribute to gun infection as well as in diagnosing problems with the gums. Treatments vary from non-surgical therapies to surgical procedures.

image (21)There are various procedures available for the restoration of gums and other periodontal disease in the traditional form of flap surgery along with bone grafting and use of GTR membrane and other technique such as Gingivectomy, state of the art Periodontal plastic surgery for root coverage of exposed roots to bring in the state of healthy and stable condition. In recent years the awareness among patients have resulted in tremendous for the preservation and prevention of tooth loss, felt presence of importance to save the natural tooth rather than going for replacement. Apart from that more cosmetic forms of treatment in the form of lasers have given new dimension on periodontal treatment approach. Advances in dentistry have been so dramatic that dentists are now into tissue engineering and isolating stem cells from dental tissue and manipulating them for tissue reconstruction.
